In the second half of the decade we will start to become familiar with a new fuel for our cars: hydrogen. Next year, already, the first large production Toyota FCV, whose final design has recently been revealed, will be on European roads.
Next spring it will launch in Toyota's home market in Japan, but it will be marketed exclusively in regions with sufficient infrastructure of distribution and supply of hydrogen so that customers can conveniently refuel. Later, probably from summer 2015, it will be also offered in the U.S. and Europe.
Toyota has unveiled that the FCV in Japan costs 7 million yen, the equivalent of 50,000 euros, excluding the Japanese sales tax. It is difficult to compare this rate with what we will have in Spain, but we know that this is a car that will not exactly be affordable.
However, we're talking about a pioneering technology that brings, in the case of the world's leading manufacturer, 20 years of development. In fact, since 2002 various units of the Toyota FCHV rolled into testing. They were provided, on lease, to Japanese and American drivers for use in real-world conditions. From these experiences the system has been refined to reach the final production version we will see in 2015.
