Electric models achieve the highest satisfaction rates among their owners. Some of them say:
“In the beginning it was the second car of the house, but now we fight to see who drives it, especially when we have to go downtown”, says Cristina Garcia, 43 years old executive with two children. She continues: “We bought it in August 2015 and nowadays it has 20,000 kilometers, because I live on the outskirts of Madrid and I drive every day between 60 to 70 kilometers. What I like best are the facilities for parking and fuel economy. I have a special green fee and it works perfect for me. But I also appreciate its driving very much, because it is very soft, soundless, agile and relaxing. I am sure that I will repeat with electric cars”.
Drivers of electric cars are showing higher satisfaction rates, above 90%, and even brands such as Nissan around 95%, according to studies by the manufacturers of these models. And it is also confirmed by the following users.
Elias Perez, 20, Industrial Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Madrid student, declares that the electric car has changed his life: “Before using and electric car it to me took between an hour and hour and a half long to coming to college, because I have a very bad combination of public transport. Besides, it was unfeasible come by car, because I spend all day here and the cost of regulated parking was prohibitive. Then I found the alternative electric car. Besides the comfort, now it takes me half an hour to come and winning two more hours to study each day. I arrived, parked and I forget any worries because parking is for free and have not been spending money on gasoline. Nor do I have problems of autonomy, I drive about 40 kilometers a day and we only charge every two or three days. I've never had to go home to recharge”. Elias also appreciates relaxation in driving and the verve. “It's very quiet, so you hear good music. And it is a powerful as a gasoline car or even more”.
Mario Gonzalez Lopez, 38 years old engineer, is about to turn one year with its electric car, which is now close to 10,000 kilometers. “I normally drive 20 to 30 kilometers per day, but sometimes double this distance, and recharging a couple of times a week is enough for me”. He also feels as a pioneer and enjoy its advantages: “It's what I like, because we are few, I see myself as a privileged: I can go to the center of the city and not pay for parking in some shopping centers because they have reserved places…everything becomes easy. And there is also the advantage of the environment, because for me not polluting is always positive. If it helps your pocket and also reduces emissions, it is much the better”.
Mario also likes driving. “I have another car 200 HP and I am going to sell it. They are like the ancient and the modern, the past and the future. The electric accelerates very well, very smooth and quiet, it has a relaxing ride. About the autonomy allowed to travel, I think thermal current cars will be history in a near future”.

Conduce si te apetece / If you fancy, then drive

We are witnessing one of the most exciting moments in automotive history. The technology is exploding and we have never had an innovation stage as fast as the current one "assured Carlos Ghosn, president of Renault-Nissan Alliance, at a packed press dinner held on the past Tokyo Motor Show.
After leading the deployment of electric vehicles with the Leaf model (200.00 units sold), the consortium wants to do the same with autonomous driving: “In 2016 we will launch version 1.0, with the highway autopilot; in 2018 it will reach 2.0, which will add overtaking ability and lane change, and in 2020 the 3.0, with an automatic system of city guiding. The aim is not to replace the driver, but provide the necessary for the use when not feel like driving”, has remarked the executive of Renault-Nissan.
Just hours after the remarks, Nissan convened a small group of international journalists for a tour in an autonomous driving vehicle. This is the Nissan Intelligent Vehicle Driving, a prototype-laboratory with the latest developments of the brand.
In open traffic without driver
The first surprise comes soon: in the street, and on the left lane avenue open to traffic. There, those responsible for the brand wait, under the command of Tetsuya Iijima, general manager of the Department of Autonomous Driving Nissan. After describing the highlights, the tour starts. “Man is responsible for 90% of traffic accidents, and the goal of autonomous driving technology Nissan is to minimize them.”
Nissan lab rolling starts to go the first kilometers of the journey. And this driverless electric Leaf runs almost unnoticed among the other cars, like a normal one: it accelerates and stops by itself to keep the front distance, it stops at the traffic lights or when its predecessor does, It places in the proper lane in a crossroads where you plan to turn, it turns to trace the curves and, of course, it reads the signals and adjusts its speed to them.
The route is displayed on the browser screen on the center console, but each change is reflected in a smaller one located in the instrument panel, which varies according to the speed. From 0 till 20 km / h, it projects the red framed image car of the car located in front of it. And  frames in green the rest of the cars and traffic lights. From 20 km / h to 30 km / h, the display shows a graphic with the cars going in the same lane. And from 30 km / h it projects a view of the entire environment.
With these curiosities the test flows in an ever tense routine, because of the possibility of some unforeseen events that alters the sequence of accelerations, turns, and automatic braking. Driving Intelligent Vehicle moves in a fluid drivers and vehicles that want to reach the destination as soon as possible and do not suspect that among them flows an experimental car without human driver. So, after more or less 30 minutes and 20 kilometers, the prototype comes full circle without the slightest impact and, above all, without its driver touching the wheel during all the driving.

¿500 Km de autonomía en los eléctricos? / 500 km autonomy in electric?

Last week, Carlos Ghorn (CEO of Renault-Nissan) chairing a meeting of shareholders in Japan gave born a gossip: one of the videos that were played to the audience (minute 41:24) showed a dashboard of the Nissan Leaf with a 544 Km remaining range.
Is it a marketing strategy department? Or do you really have in mind to sell something similar to this soon?
Anyway, it is clear that autonomy will rise its level, the question is how much?
Tesla Model 3 seems to set the standard of the electric automobile, and all manufacturers have in mind 300km of autonomy for the next generation of battery-powered vehicles. The Japanese are no exception and the new Nissan Leaf, which will arrive in 2016, will reach roughly that figure.
But the 544 km that can be seen in the projection skip all expectations and now we go to figures that are only available in the sector leader: Tesla Model S. There is another ingredient that still adds more uncertainty to this: electric car range depends on who measured it.
Japanese are masters at "cheating" with its JC08 test cycle, by far the most generous. In the United States, with EPA approval things are set much closer to reality. However, 544 Km of surreal autonomy JC08 are more than 325 Km in the real world.
There are still a few months until this whole affair is uncovered. It is clear that Nissan's alliance with LG Chem is going to benefit the Japanese to have better batteries but, above all, cheaper ones.

Renault has already decided which strategy should be followed respect to Renault ZOE’s engine. At present, the electric model offers, for months, two possibilities: the classic with the Continental engine Q210 and another with his new engine R240 that allows you 30 kilometers of autonomy.
According to Vicent Carre, Renault chief marketing and sales, this increased autonomy has been responsible for increasing sales in the Renault ZOE. This year has been sold 153% more units than in the previous year, and this trend is expected to continue or exceeded in 2016.
But sales have grown not only by increased autonomy: the moment the model has begun to offer battery-owned and the devoted aids to electric mobility in certain countries are also two landmarks in this process. Referring to this issue, Renault manager reminds the countries which have been reduced aid to electric cars that we must support new initiatives are gradually becoming our future.
Carre also pointed out, referring to its alliance with Nissan, who has offered the new engine of the Japanese ZOE in case they want to take advantage of its benefits for the Nissan LEAF.

As we announced a few weeks ago, this weekend Madrid has become the national benchmark for electric mobility thanks to the VEM 2015 initiative which showed the slogan "Enjoy Madrid in electric vehicle".
12,000 people attended the act discovering the virtues of electric mobility due to conferences and vehicle testing. Leading manufacturers (Renault, Nissan, BMW, Peugeot, Citroen, Volkswagen, Kia Motors and Mitsubishi) have cooperated in the act and have recognized to feel overwhelmed by the number of tests requested given the success of the initiative.
This III March for the Electric Vehicle has run between Legazpi and the Plaza de Colón and has exceeded 100 electric vehicles; both two and four wheels.
In addition to vehicles test and information, manufacturers have taken advantage to make deliveries of vehicles to the Madrid authorities, as Nissan did with his delivery of three units for the SAMUR and Civil Protection.
The most visited stand during the event was the Renault one. The new autonomy of Renault ZOE with a more efficient engine was presented. They are the ones who made more dynamic tests have been made with models Renault Twizy, Renault ZOE, and Renault Kangoo Z.E.
In conclusion we would like to emphasize that the electricity used in the event came from 100% renewable sources.

Leaf and ZOE will be able to cover 300 km without additional charges.
Carlos Ghosn, Renault Nissan CEO, gives again a chance to electrical to see them take off. Last January at the Detroit Motor Show he said new technology will benefit and improve electrical’s autonomy.
"Our aim is to double battery life, approaching to 300 km in normal conditions and 400 kilometers in closed circuits," said Beatrice Foucher, director of Renault electric program without confirming any release date into the market.
A new lithiumion battery supplied by the Korean LG is what will make this real and help electrical being more and more autonomous. Renault will show in early March at the Geneva Motor Show a new electric motor that involves a more efficient and higher performance.
This evolution is related to Asian technological progress, and is favored by the sharp drop in the price of the batteries due to increasing productivity. The average price of batteries has lowered, from $ 1,000 in 2010 to 400 in 2014, and the future holds $ 180 in 2025.
This development is essential for the market, and therefore the future of the electric car, which is currently somewhat stalled due to the "low" autonomy provided. "With these batteries, the aim is to develop a real market opportunity that does not exist today," says Beatrice Foucher.
We hope all this forecasts will be reflected in reality.

Entrevista a Antonio Berzal: nos cuenta sus primeros días de su taxi eléctrico / Interview with Antonio Berzal: talk about his first days with its electric taxi

¿Te has quedado sin batería alguna vez?
¿Has rechazado alguna carrera por no tener batería?

After three weeks driving around the streets of Madrid with its Nissan Leaf, we wanted to know how are his first impression and a couple of more specific details about the first taxi driver with an electric car in the capital of Spain.
Antonio had to withdraw his previous car. The engine of Its Seat Altea XL Diesel was exhausted and was time to consider whether to repair or buying a new car. This is the reason why Antonio began thinking the possibility of buying for an electric taxi.
¿Ecology or Economy?
Economy, without any doubt. It was a matter of numbers. The Leaf cost  16,000 € with all the aids applied. Also had to add 1,800 € installing the taximeter. From all this will be deducted 21% VAT. It is not more expensive than the other models I consulted and the monthly fuel savings are enormous. Note that I spent  400 € a month on gas.
Also I can recharge for free on Nissan authorized dealers.
Where and when recharge?
At home I can recharge to 16 A. The charging point have a second counter since I want to be able to separate the energy I use to drive from the energy of my house. Doing that I can deduct the VAT of the energy used to drive. I program to start recharging at night in the cheapest price segment. I pay € 60 a month to Ibil (recharge company) and another 19 € to Iberdrola for the equipment installed.
At lunchtime I use the free Nissan rechargers.
In what areas do you drive?
All around Madrid. I live outside Madrid so my daily journey involve spending 20% battery before arriving to Legazpi area, where normally I start my labor journey. While this may seem like a problem, it is not because the consumption at the city is very small and the autonomy of the car is enough.
How many kilometers drives in a day?
An average of 220 km. With the fast recharge at lunchtime I usually arrive at home with a 10 or 20 percent of the battery. Achievement approximately an average of 140 kilometers of autonomy per charge. It would be impossible to drive an electric Taxi if There Were not fast charge network in Nissan authorized dealers.
Have you changed your work habits in comparison with the previous taxi?
Maybe some, but not for worst. Before, I left at 5am and now I do at 7am and get home at the same time, at about half past 6. Before, I did more fares from the airport and now more in the city. The numbers of runs is more or less the same and I start a little later, so I think I have gained in work quality.
Have you ever run out of battery?
No. Not yet. The network of fast charge helps me enough. It is also a matter control and when the autonomy arrives at 30 or 40 kilometers, I recharge the battery or go home.
Have you refused a fare for not having battery?
Well, not yet. It is possible that if someone ask to go to a village outside of the city I couldn't do it, but that fares are not usual.
Will there be more taxi drivers like you in Madrid soon?
Many ask me about the car price, autonomy and charging times. They look interested. Madrid taxis have to be changed at ten years old maximum so, if any of who ask me about are in this situation, they may change.
What your customers say when they came up to your taxi?
Some of them do not realize that it's an electric taxi. Some ask me about the little noise it makes and that's when I say that they are in the first electric taxi of Madrid. That's when the questions began. The door labeling gives a track and many enter knowing as it is electric.
Is it profitable electric taxi?
I do not know, it’s way too early to get any conclusion. Before beginning I was nervous because I did not know how the car respond for autonomy, for recharging ... Now I'm calm and I have good feelings.
We left Antonio and his Nissan Leaf to enjoy the rest of his day off. Apparently, it does not look very nervous neither very worried as the experience of these three weeks seems to have been positive. Antonio is not passionate about new technologies; he is not an environmental fighter and is not a super fan of electric cars. Antonio is a practical driver who has made his numbers and has been reported on the characteristics of the car and about the possibilities of recharge and saw that he could earn his life and work using an electric taxi. This shows that the electric car may be the result of a logical and unsentimental reflection. We will follow his trajectory and we will look at the response of the car and battery.

R. ¡No, gracias! Esto es como magia... Hace cinco años, eran cuatro millones, luego siete y ahora... ¡Vamos, hombre!
Hoy me siento cómodo produciendo 8,3 millones.
R. Se hará empresa a empresa, mercado a mercado.

In 1996, after 11 years working in Michelin, Carlos Ghosn (Porto Velho, Brasil, 1954), graduated in Engineering by the “École polytechnique du Paris”, arrived to Renault as Executive Vice President to face a complete restructuration that restored profits to the French company the following year. During March 1999, the alliance between Renault and Nissan was made and Ghosn was named Chief of Operations of the Japanese firm to invert the situation of large losses and a runaway debt: again, in its first year, achieved economic profit. In 2000 was designated Nissan President. After one year, is also named CEO. In 2005 also named Renault's President that combines with Nissan's presidency as maximum responsible of the alliance of both companies.

The visionary personality of Ghosn was confirmed with his strategic move for the Electric Vehicle in 2007. Three years after, Nissan Leaf arrived with 170 kilometers range and has become an icon and the best-selling Electric Vehicle: with more than 100,000 units.

Question. You had repeated in several occasions that Spain has become a good place to manufacture cars after the economic Crisis. What has been done well?

Answer. It is true. The country has done some proposals that our sector consider truly favorable. First is a big change on mentality. Employment is more valuable and the need of keep it stronger than before; Keep not with legal obstacles but with competitiveness between companies. Second, labor costs decreased. Third, we find more flexibility on the labor market that some years ago. All these factors made Spain more competitive and the investment is coming again. We are using all our capacity, because we think that in Spain we leave the crisis stronger that when we started it.

Q. What has been the contribution of unions to the competitiveness?

A. In my opinion they have a constructive role, understanding the economic situation and providing its own solution to the problem. We are very proud of the agreement for the competitiveness signed in Renault. It’s a sign of maturity and good intentions to keep the business in Spain.

Q. Some executives assure that the manufactures should produce at least 10 million vehicles in 2020 to survive.

A. No, thanks! This is not magic… Five years ago, they talked about four millions, then seven and now… C’mon! I don’t think there is a threshold in which if you’re above you’re saved and if you’re under you’re condemned.

Q. At what production volume you will feel comfortable?

A. I’m going to tell you where I feel comfortable today, but this could change the following year, in two years… because this sector is very dynamic. Today I feel comfortable producing 8.3 million vehicles.

Q. Will be more fusions on the industry or the current status will remain?

A. The logic aims at consolidating.

Q. But it will be with fusions, alliances such as Renault and Nissan or in specific agreements of models or technologies?

A. It will be done Company by Company, Market by market. I cannot predict what the others will do, but the more reasonable is cooperation, more consolidation and more sharing between parts.

Q. New common platforms will be also developed (chassis and basic elements), as between the new Twingo and Smart?

A. I don’t like the common development history, it’s too complicated. I prefer divide: one make a part, other make another part and after, we work together. I don’t believe on engineers with different cultures and methods working together in a specific part of a vehicle.

Q. Are you going to extend the agreement with Daimler?

A. Sure! We started with three projects and now there are 12.

Q. What role will have each brand on the Renault-Nissan alliance?

A. Renault is a global brand without any capacity limit: it can manufacture any product. Dacia is a regional brand (European and Mediterranean). Samsung too, but only for South Korea. Alpine is a specific brand for sport cars. Nissan is a worldwide brand, Infiniti too but about quality, and Datsun is low cost and global.

Q. You were the first to bet on electric car, did you expect such a slow start?

A. I am optimistic about the future for a simple reason: I see what's happening on the markets. In China they are taking a strict support policy. In the US too, and sales go up significantly. Europe still behind, but maybe for the slow deployment of infrastructure. The development has been slower than expected, but it will not be an insignificant niche. It is impossible to comply with the new emissions standard in the USA without many of the cars being electric. I have no doubt that electric cars will be part of the future and we will keep our technology leadership and our offer. The customer satisfaction is very high, the technology is under control, lower costs and improved batteries. Everything moves toward a mass consumer market.

Q. When you launched your electric offensive, it was expected that China supported this technology so fast?

A. Well, they are supporting now. As you know, Nissan is manufacturing there more and more electric cars because they have taken it seriously. They are pressuring the authorities and officials to buy them. In China there are many things going in the right direction and development of the electric car is going to be really important.

Q. For When? In about a year?

A. It is taking off now. What matters is that we will prevail. The day the electric car finish the taking off and will be manufactured in mass we will have a great advantage over the competition. The Chinese government bet on it and all the governments are incentivizing. Why billions of euros are invested for the development of batteries? Because it is the future. I say it is impossible continue selling 85 million conventional cars each year. Impossible! The only zero-emission traction available today is electric vehicle and I think  that the Chinese will show us the way. In the US about 12,000 electric vehicles sold per month and China could turn around faster soon.

Q. What is needed to accelerate the process?

A. Recharging infrastructure and fast chargers. Both the US and China are developing some systems. There are many cities with more electric cars because the infrastructure is tailored to the user’s needs. But while there is a concern about where to load the car if we are driving a lot of kilometers it will continue having limitations. With a quick 25 minute charge everything will be easier. There are suppliers who have submitted charging prototypes in 10 minutes.

Q. What is most important in Europe, reduce battery costs or extend battery autonomy?

A. The fundamental is the charging infrastructure and is not depending on us. After, the cost of the car, which basically is related to the cost of the battery.

Q. We will see a big evolution of batteries soon?

A. There are so many battery manufacturers!  They all compete in technology. There will be smaller, cheaper batteries, and lighter cars. You can expect a big evolution, but we cannot set a date.

Q. But the improvements are not arriving...

A. Is kaizen (development of real-time production in Japanese). They show us and we decide if we want it or not. But we see the evolution and you will also see it.
