This week we are talking about how many times public institutions are usually the first to use electric cars. This is done in interest of manufacturers who give prototypes for testing in real conditions, or because the towns are convinced by the environmental and economic advantages of electric transport.
Beginning on 1 March the city council of Madrid will be testing 4 Nissan LEAF to see if in the future the electric car will be a good option for the city.
In Gijon a car-share scheme has been made available for the town council employees. The scheme utilizes 8 units which have managed to prevent the emission of one ton of CO2.
Barcelona’s government has also opted for the use of electric vehicles donated by Seat for council staff. In this way the Brand will also get to be publicized.
Finally, we have the example of Malaga; it is becoming a reference point for electric transport at a national level. Having added 20 more electric vehicles for use by the city council, there will be an estimated savings of 62,000 euros per year. Besides the economic savings 82,000 kg of carbon dioxide will stop being emitted into the atmosphere every two years. What’s more these vehicles will help to reduce noise pollution in the city.

Iniciativas “eléctricas” en nuestro país / "Power" initiatives in our country

This week we talked about three initiatives that deal with electric transport in our country. Three large companies are opting for change; Post Office, TMB (Metropolitan Transport of Barcelona) and the Red Cross.
They will change (or at least try to) their fleets, introducing electric vehicles, keeping a close eye on the results to decide whether this new plan meets the expectations in service and thus slowly expanding the "electric" service.
Post Office Group has opted for electric mopeds from the Spanish company QuaZZar. There will be a trial period of 5 to 8 weeks that will attempt to demonstrate the viability of this type of motorbike for the delivery service and to see if there are advantages over a conventional motorbike. The two selected mopeds are equipped with easily removable batteries, allowing them to always have spare a battery charged and ready for use, avoiding delays. This initiative will take place in two locations thanks to the Government of Navarra and the program "Acción Impulso Emprendedor ".
Barcelona's government has decided to implement the Zeus project (Zero Emission Urban Bus System) and to start trying to clean up the air in the city by promoting electric transport. The city will have four fully electric buses that will be recharged in the garages of the TMB using fast chargers.
In the case of Red Cross the discussion is of electric bike prototype, but it is believed to be a good solution to arrive on time to crowed areas. You could travel at a higher speed through the dense traffic of a city, and even shorten the route, by driving down stairs, on sidewalks, etc. The bikes will be equipped with the necessary medical equipment.

Florencia duplicará sus puntos de recarga y adquirirá 85 nuevos vehículos eléctricos / Florence will double its recharging points and will buy 85 new electric vehicles

We find constantly more examples that decide carry out any kind of sustainable mobility plan.

This week we have a very interesting case that could serve as an example to many European cities.

Florence, the capital of Italian Renaissance Art, seeks to restrict the traffic in the old town only to electric vehicles in 2016 and, to accomplish that, it is ready to keep the national leadership in installing recharging points.

Nowadays we can find in Florence 115 charging stations and with the approval of the new 170 they will be a total of 285, more than the double in quantity but much more in quality, because new stations are able to support quick recharges.

Furthermore, the City Council has also announced that will renew 85 of his combustion vehicles for electrical ones and 50 municipal employees will be given electric bicycles to go to work. These initiatives will help significantly to improve the environmental pollution.

The intention of the mayor is promoting the purchase and the use of electric vehicles among the population and believes that the first thing is lead by example.

These kinds of initiatives are a first step towards what we should build together.

Vehículos eléctricos en aeropuertos internacionales / Electric vehicles in international airports

During February we want to highlight the importance of some public and private organizations promoting the use of electric vehicles.
These initiatives are very important because they push the sustainable service and therefore, this is beneficial to all of us.
This week we are talking about Hanoi (the second most important city of Vietnam) which will have electric vehicles to communicate their airport terminals.
The Ministry of Transport of Vietnam, has approved the use of electric cars for passenger transfers between terminals due to: Noi Bai International Airport has been expanded, in order to prevent fraud (quite common among taxi drivers) and, of course, to help protect the environment.
This initiative is expected to become operational at the end of this year, coinciding with the entry into service of the second terminal.
It is still pending to choose vehicles that best suits the airport transportation needs because traffic of non-electric vehicles between terminals will be prohibited.

Years ago, Subaru provides some of its vehicles with the EyeSight system. A system that is able to improve driving safety detecting objects, and can autonomously keep the distance with the vehicle that is ahead avoiding collisions. The new aspect is this system has received an important upgrade that will increase its performance.
The new EyeSight incorporates two new cameras that recognize colors and increase the effectiveness recognizing objects in front of them, being able to recognize the brake lights of the vehicle driving in front of the user.
Cameras, on both sides of the windshield, send images to a central computer which processes them and identifies obstacles. This device can be activated or deactivated according to the driver.
Cameras also can detect pedestrians or road lanes and work in the case of an accident or an involuntary changing lane might happen.
Next year Subaru plans to launch onto the market another new system for blind spot detection. It will be able to detect vehicles approaching from the blind spots preventing changing lane, assuming that the driver had used the turn signal.
It is clear that progress (such as this) we are seeing in the automotive world are a solution for reducing traffic accidents. We find ourselves constantly closer to autonomous driving.

El BMW i3 en tu muñeca / The BMW i3 on your wrist

As we said last week, inventions that seemed be part of the future are slowly coming to our life.
Now it's the turn of the BMW i3. It has been recently presented an application to control the i3 from the Galaxy Gear, Samsung Smartwatch. This application, compatible with the watch, is similar to the one that is installed on the phone and it allows remotely interaction with the car, "Knight Rider” pure style.
We can check the status of the recharge, the autonomy or check if windows and sunroof are closed. It will be also possible (among many other features) the climate control or lock the car.
One of the more commented points, since we know this vehicle, is the price; however we are going to do a little calculation:

Nowadays, the average price of fuel is: 1.51 euro per liter of gasoline and 1.48 euro per liter of diesel. Taking into account that the average consumption of a diesel vehicle is around 5.7 liters per 100km and the consumption of a gasoline vehicle is 6.5 liters per 100km, we have the following information:

The owner of a diesel model that makes a daily route of 60km will spend around 3.42 liters per day, what it is the same; 5.06 euros daily. The owner of a gasoline model, with the same route, will spend 3.9 liters or 5.88 euros per day.
To the owner of an i3, being realistic, are guaranteed around 150 km per charge and a full charge costs 2.5 euros more or less. This means that to make the same 60 km daily route we would need 1 euro. Comparing with a gasoline or diesel vehicle, with the i3 we can save almost 5 euros per day in fuel. Could be interesting?

El vehículo autosuficiente del futuro / The self-sufficient vehicle of the future

It seems we are going one step further regarding the electric car. The American manufacturer Ford has revealed at the fair held each January in Las Vegas his immediate news: a Ford C-Max which can be moved by solar energy.
The name that has been given is Ford C-Max Solar Energi Concept. It is equipped with a solar panel on the roof that allows recharge the battery set that power the hybrid system. According to the manufacturer, the equivalent of a full day solar charging will allow the vehicle to obtain the same performance as the C-Max conventional plug-in hybrid.
One important point is that this new system does not close doors; the new vehicle will continue charging through the electric current also.
The most innovative thing about this invention is that in the sunroof will be a kind of magnifying glasses that will work just like a sunflower to "catch" the sun's rays as it moves from east to west. Ford claims that a full charge of sun is the same than about four hours of conventional charge.

This prototype will be tested in the coming months in order to see if is feasible to go into series production.

It seems that we are growing towards a cleaner future.
