The automobile industry is totally globalized. This situation results in an aggressive and friendly war at the same time among its members (not too many). We will explain in the next post the meaning of “aggressive and friendly war “.

Today we are going to introduce the opponents, members who are waging this battle. In the next post we will explain the scenario, and in a third post we will try to analyze what could happen in this industry in the coming years.

The "armies" in order of size on the market, according to 2011:

1.      General Motors is formed by Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, GMC, Opel, Vauxhall, Holden, etc. GM has been responsible for buying, selling and several joint ventures in the last years, specially the alliance with Fiat that created companies property of GM and Fiat that still exist and are shared between both. In addition, GM just bought PSA Peugeot Citroën shares.

2.      Volkswagen is formed by Audi, Seat, Skoda, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Scania, MAN, Ducati, etc. For a moment, Porsche tried to buy the whole group but finally happened the other way around.

3.       Renault-Nissan. Although many people don’t know it, a big part of Nissan belongs to Renault. The alliance is also constituted by brands like Infiniti, Renault Samsung and Lada (because of the purchase of the Russian brand AvtoVAZ).

4.      Toyota. Just two or three years ago became to world number one sales. However the industrial crisis in Japan after the earthquake, the tsunami and the Fukushima nuclear accident, made that Toyota lost a field that they still haven't recovered. Toyota’s group has brands like Lexus and Daihatsu.

5.      Hyundai. The Korean manufacturer is now an important candidate to achieve a high sales level. The group includes Hyundai and KIA brands. In addition, is the worldwide leader in seagoing vessels manufacturing.

6.      Ford is the second biggest American manufacturer, formed by Lincoln, Mercury and Mazda. In last years, following a similar policy to GM, has sold other brands; Volvo to Geely and Jaguar-Land Rover to the Indian brand Tata.

7.      Fiat-Chrysler. Due to the brands basic necessity of bring together volumes of production in order to depreciate the automobile development cost, there are brands that have needed become allies or buy / let buy for others. This is the case of Fiat and Chrysler. Fiat has an affair with GM years ago, as we said previously, however it didn’t work. Later, tried to buy Opel when GM wanted to sell it but finally neither worked. Fiat was aware of the necessity of join forces with other manufacturer in order to increase volumes, so tried it with Chrysler. In this moment, Chrysler came from its failed alliance with Daimler (owner, between other brands, of Mercedes-Benz). Chrysler always had been the third biggest American manufacturer, however started being part of Daimler in a huge crisis between the 80s and 90s. This alliance had bad consequences for both partners and they separated again. Chrysler spent years into the hands of financial enterprises until few years ago that was bought by Fiat. Nowadays, between both enterprises have achieved join several brands: Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Ferrari, Maserati, Abarth, Iveco, New Holland, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep y RAM, between others.

8.      PSA Peugeot Citroën, formed by Peugeot and Citroen. Historically it was a family business and nowadays the Peugeot family still has an important participation on it. They just sold a major stake to GM.

Now comes the biggest group but with different natures. We find the Japanese Honda (Honda and Acura) and Suzuki, leaders in Japan and the United States but not in Europe, Mitsubishi (Industrial giant with tentacles out of the automobile industry), Subaru (owned by other Japanese industrial group) and Isuzu, principal leader in the manufacture of small commercial vehicles and trucks.

On the other hand, we see the luxury German manufacturers. Daimler owns brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Smart, AMG and Setra. Daimler is a very powerful holding in Germany, even outside the automotive sector. As we already mentioned, they had an affair with Chrysler but nobody liked it. In Bavaria we have BMW, which also sells Mini and Rolls-Royce brands. Is one of the smallest industries of automobile that achieves a good way to survive in this giant market thanks to its position and margin.

In the emerging countries we can find a huge number of manufacturers, however we can highlight these:

China: BYD (Build your dreams), Chery, Dongfeng, SAIC (who bought certain rights to Rover brand before closing, and then opened a new brand called Roewe), Geely (owner of "London Taxi company" and Volvo, among others), and Great Wall Motors.

In India stand out Tata (who recently bought Jaguar and Land Rover) and Mahindra.

We have already introduced the "players". In next post we will explain the scenario in which they are playing.

NATO Scientists Testing EM Beam to Stop Suicide Bombers

Seguiremos atentos.

A week ago, I found on a magazine a really interesting article about electromagnetic compatibility. It talked about a research of Norwegian scientists that demonstrated the effectiveness of a high-intensity electromagnetic beam against vehicles.

In this report they demonstrated (video included) that the device works by generating a very high-intensity pulse that interferes with the vehicle’s electronic control system, effectively stopping the engine. While mounted inside the back of a moving vehicle, the beam also successfully stops another car approaching from behind. This research is led by NATO because the main application is stop suicide bombers’ vehicles before they reach their target.

3 years ago, an EMC laboratory responsible asked us for advice about how get the same thing that is mentioned in this article. His intention was take part in an EU public competition about a similar project. As an example, they wanted to stop a car if he skipped a Civil Guard control. We did not give importance to that; however it seems that they are working hard on it.

According to this article, the project is scheduled to conclude in 2014. Some thoughts come to my mind with this news.

-            If it is managed to stop the vehicle, it is pretty probable that the electronic vehicle is damaged permanently although they say no (I have daily experiences with our EMC essays). So, if you are not a terrorist and pass near the radiation beam, you should call a low truck and go to the car repair shop.

-            It is said that is harmless for people. If I was a suicide bomber I would not care, however I am not, so I would not pass close to these areas.

-            And finally, like someone told me once, the day in which customers require us to pass the anti-terrorist standard in our devices, could arrive.

We will be aware of this.

IAA Frankfurt

Few days ago ended in Frankfurt the IAA (International Automobil-Ausstellung). Essential event for automobile enthusiasts and professionals. It takes place every two years and more and more is secured as one of the highlights of the year in terms of everything related to cars.

As manufacturers of automobile components, we should be aware of what has been presented there. Like the rest of automobile fairs in recent times, in addition to the usual futuristic prototypes, always spectaculars, the market trend goes towards innovation, reducing consumption and emissions.

Mercedes-Benz has introduced its Class S 500 Hybrid Plug-In, with a consumption of 3 liters per 100km and emissions of only 69 gCO2/km.

Peugeot has presented the Peugeot 208 Hybrid with a consumption of 2 liters per 100km and emissions of 49 grCO2/km.

The Nissan van e-NV200 will go into service as a taxi in Barcelona next year. As 100% electric vehicle, its CO2 emissions per kilometer are zero (counting only the vehicle emissions). This vehicle is also confirmed as the new taxi in New York.

As all of you probably know, Google is developing a project in which a car is able to drive in a 100% automatically way, interacting with the traffic and pedestrians without danger or difference comparing with a human driver. I share the text that appears in Google search engine if we search for "Google driverless car”:

“The Google driverless car is a project by Google that involves developing technology for autonomous cars. The project is currently being led by Google engineer Sebastian Thrun, director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and co-inventor of Google Street View. Thrun's team at Stanford created the robotic vehicle Stanley which won the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge and its US$2 million prize from the United States Department of Defense. The team developing the system consisted of 15 engineers working for Google, including Chris Urmson, Mike Montemerlo, and Anthony Levandowski who had worked on the DARPA Grand and Urban Challenges”.

This car is able to drive autonomously in city and road, detecting other vehicles, traffic signs, pedestrians, etc...

The U.S. state of Nevada passed a law on June 29, 2011 permitting the operation of autonomous cars in Nevada. Google had been lobbying for robotic car laws. The Nevada law went into effect on March 1, 2012, and the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles issued the first license for an autonomous car in May 2012. The license was issued to a Toyota Prius modified with Google's experimental driverless technology.

Regarding this, I have many questions I would like to share with you:

1.      It seems logical that an automatic driving system would reduce accidents, would give more comfort and perhaps would improve traffic. What other benefits do you see in this automatic car and the automatic driving system?

2.     This kind of technology leads us to a "standardized" driving, an American driving way where everybody flows through the motorway instead of drive. Does the automatic car lose freedom that I can decide what to do and how at any given time?

3.      Is it being creating two types of driving according to user or moment? One for daily movements and other for the enjoyment of the driver who likes just drive?

4.     It doesn’t seem reasonable that Google will become a car manufacturer; however he will provide the car with the intelligent system. Taking for himself the great value added (software), and leaving the hardware / mechanical with lower added value for manufacturers. Are the current car OEMs (giants like GM, Toyota, Volkswagen, Daimler, etc ...) prepared to share their business with a new giant like Google? Will they cooperate or will they enter into struggle?

It seems clear which is the current trend…is slowly, but in a firm way all electrical devices are being established in markets.

When the autonomy increases and prices fall, we will see growing this market and the expansion will be evident.

Next November will be on sale the BMWi3, the first new electric car between at least 5 more that are expected to be launched during 2014. Thanks to Government grants, prices will be adjusted more to conventional vehicles.

One of the most interesting points of this new trend is the possibility of reaching a day when pollution by automobiles may decrease in an obvious way, that day; the waiting time will have been worth it.

¿Y el coche eléctrico? / And the electric car?

Society is becoming much more aware of the need to follow the sustainable growth path, encouraging between citizens a more environmentally friendly mobility. Electric vehicle is definitely a very interesting alternative, because reduces considerably pollution in large cities. Lately it is increasingly betting on it, appearing regularly in advertising campaigns. However, why can't we see in cities so many cars as are proposed in advertisements? Why can’t we find the recharging stations?

We should think about if the Goverments are really interested in spend money in favour of the environment or, on the contrary, they are being pressured by the big oil companies. These industries, despite the limitations of oil reserves, are not willing to lose such a big amount of money that provides them the automotive industry. For this reason, they are doing everything they can to slow down the electric vehicle development process. It is important we start to change this situation, opposing to these pressures and increasing the public support to research, development and innovation.

The big U.S. vehicle manufacturers recorded in June their best sales since the crisis started

Crisis marked the big three U.S. automobile manufacturers: General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. However their sales have increased little by little and reports say that in the first half of 2013, sales volume before crisis in the U.S. market has been recovered. Toyota also increased in this period a 10%.
General Motors increased a 6.5% comparing to 2012 and the highest monthly record since 2008.
Ford registered its best month since 2006 with 235,643 units sold a 13.4% more.
Chrysler is not far behind; this year has registered its best June since 2007.
Toyota sold 195,235 vehicles in the month of June in United States and a 6% more than the previous fiscal year. They expect continue growing during the second half of 2013.
Now, we just should have hope for this number of sales continues in crescendo and the automobile market rises from the crisis definitely.
